History
the oldest sporting competition held at the present time
The America's Cup is the oldest sporting competition ever held. It dates back to 1851; the modern Olympic Games began in 1896.
Es tracta d’una competició entre Clubs de Iots de vela en la qual el vencedor es fa amb el trofeu, que consisteix en una Copa (un aguamanil de plata).
The winning club can and must keep the trophy until another club challenges it and is forced to defend the Cup in a new regatta. The USA won the first edition and therefore the Cup and kept it, unchallenged, for 133 years.
The name America's cup comes from the name of the boat that won the first edition of the regatta, the schooner America.
"Now the Cup is not yours"
It was in 1983 when Australia beat the American boat and for the first time the defending team lost the trophy. The truth is that the participating clubs ultimately represent the countries, hence the huge success of the competition, so daring and exciting for the fans of each country.
At present, a number of challenging Clubs are challenging the Defender of the trophy, forcing them to hold a series of preliminary races against each other, which will determine which Club, and therefore which country, will challenge the Cup holder (Defender).
